Welcome to the LHU
Theology and Religious Studies
Ph.D. Website for North America

The Department of Theology & Religious Studies welcomes you to review our Ph.D. program. Here you will find a vibrant, diverse, and exciting team, fully committed to excellence in teaching and research that serves regional, national, and international needs. Our programs encourage and support students to develop a knowledge and understanding of theology and religion in an ever-changing world.

Three things make our programs unique:

First, Liverpool Hope University is a fully accredited British State university and a long established Christian foundation with its roots in vibrant Anglican (Church of England) and Roman Catholic communities that go back to 1844. Today Liverpool Hope embraces other living Christian traditions in a truly trans-denominational, or ecumenical, manner.

Second, apart from the regular teaching staff, who also engage in undergraduate instruction, Liverpool Hope University has a large and ever expanding number of Adjunct Professors who are available to supervise and/or assist in the supervision of research students. To see a complete list of our current professors click the "Who are the Faculty?" button on the left of this panel.

Third, in designing our research programs we are making every effort to accommodate the needs of mature students, many of whom cannot afford to be full time students for three years while they write a Ph.D. thesis in the traditional manner. Therefore, we are introducing a flexible system of residence requirements supported by local supervisors to meet your needs. This means you CAN do the program full-time – three years – if that suits you; but if not, you can take it part time over six years. The costs are simply pro-rata – a part-time year costs half a full-time year.

Finally, it is worth pointing out that the City of Liverpool is a vibrant multi-cutural, multi-religious city with a rich Christian heritage that has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
